Turnaround

Companies seem to dislike the term ‘turnaround consulting’ because it represents failure. The truth is that turnaround consulting represents success at realizing the company is going in the wrong direction. The turnaround strategy is a restructuring process in which a losing industry or a company is transformed into a successful one. The only time the company fails is when it is not possible to do a turnaround anymore. You may think of the turnaround strategy as backing out of previously made bad decisions and steering your organization into a new direction before it is too late to chart a new path.

The important question is when the company should adopt the turnaround strategy. A number of factors make it necessary for companies to follow the turnaround strategy, such as changes in government regulations and policies, the threat of substitute products, changes in product demands and customer preferences along with hosts of other external factors.

Dell is the best example for a turnaround strategy. In 2006, Dell announced that it would adopt cost-cutting strategy, removed the middlemen, and started directly selling its computers to customers. However, it suffered heavy losses. In 2007, the company reversed course and started selling its products through retailers. Today, Dell is the largest computer retail brand in the world.

Apple is another successful example of the turnaround strategy. In 1985, the late Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, left the company due to its declining fortunes. The company kept declining for the ensuing twelve years until it had reached the bankruptcy level. In 1997, Steve Jobs came back to the company with a new strategy and the rest is history. Apple has become the leading tech company in the world.
